“This new way of eating has fueled my body in a way it hasn’t been in over 14 months. I am able to go the the gym, do a session of cardio AND resistance training without feeling like I’m going to pass out anymore. I’m eating almost 2,000 calories A DAY and I am continually losing inches, even though my main focus is restarting my broken metabolism.”
Before the day I decided to ask Jami what the heck “iifym/flexible dieting/ reverse dieting” was all about, I was 14 months strong in following a very strict Paleo and Whole30 way of life. I was recovering from adrenal burnout and suffering from insulin resistance. At the advice of my naturopathic doctor, I was to also avoid things like fruit and honey (sugar of any kind) and things with a high histamine count like spinach in order to heal. I was mainly eating lettuce and chicken or beef with LOTS of fat to satisfy my cravings and hunger. I had no energy. I couldn’t even go to the gym because I’d feel like passing out within 5 minutes of any exercise. I was binging on carbohydrates because they made me feel better but then I would self-punish, especially if that item contained more than 5 ingredients, wasn’t organic or had a couple grams of sugar. I started to think, “Well, I messed up anyway. There’s no point in correcting it now.” So, I would eat nothing but carbs for a week at a time and swell up like a balloon. I remember thinking, “I feel like I have an eating disorder!” I did have an eating disorder called Onorexia – an obsession with righteous eating. I had had enough.
When Jami explained what counting macros is, I instantly fell in love with the concept. But, when Jami explained how she KNEW what I was going through and that she understood the self-punishment and guilt and binging, I instantly felt like I had an amazing support system. I’m almost on week 8 of my reverse dieting and I feel amazing. This does not feel like a diet to me. In the beginning, the mental switch was a bit hard, honestly. I was still binging even though there was no reason to. I can eat what I want — I just plan it into my limit the day before and I’m fine. No cravings. I’m able to eat a plethera of healthy carbohydrates, good fats, and high quality protein. This new way of eating has fueled my body in a way it hasn’t been in over 14 months. I am able to go the the gym, do a session of cardio AND resistance training without feeling like I’m going to pass out anymore. I’m eating almost 2,000 calories A DAY and I am continually losing inches, even though my main focus is restarting my broken metabolism.
I’m eating almost 170g of carbs a day now! I am not hungry on the daily. And if I am craving sugar for whatever reason (that craving is just about gone now), I like to budget in some protein ice cream into my macros for the next day. I still eat organic, non GMO, grass-fed, etc. whenever possible and I still avoid things like fake sugars, gluten, chemicals, regular sugar and packaged items whenever possible. There’s just no guilt when I want to eat things like a gluten free cookie. Eating this way has changed my life — I now know how to plan my food instead of waiting until I’m starving with low blood sugar to just eat what’s next to me. I now know that if I want to eat something, I can do it GUILT FREE. Goodbye, eating disorder! I highly recommend flexible dieting to anybody who likes to eat like a human instead of a machine or robot. I highly recommend this to anybody who is tired of obsessing over their food or of having no energy. I took the step
and it has made all the difference.
